Ultrasound Technology

A physical exam can tell us a lot about what is going on with your dog or cat, but sometimes, we need to look a bit deeper. When we need to see inside your pet’s body, diagnostic pet ultrasound is often the best option. While X-rays are used to look at parts of your pet’s body, like bones and ligaments, pet ultrasound can be used to examine soft and fluid-filled organs.

At ABC Veterinary Clinic of Lewisville, we are thrilled to offer this high-tech service to our patients. Pet ultrasound technology makes diagnostics faster, easier, and more comfortable for your pet and enables us to begin the correct course of treatment.

Accurate Waves of Diagnostics

Pet ultrasound technology can examine your pet’s spleen, lymph nodes, pancreas, liver, kidneys, intestinal tract, heart, ovaries, uterus, testicles, and eyes. During the procedure, sound waves capture images of the organs being examined. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound exams do not expose pets to radiation. In addition, ultrasound provides a complete internal view of your pet’s organs, while an X-ray only shows the shape and size of the organs.

In many cases, pet ultrasound can be used to diagnose potential problems earlier than a physical examination alone. This type of equipment can be used to detect things like masses, abscesses, cysts, and nodules that may not be detectable during an exam or on an X-ray.

Sedation is Rarely Required

One of the many advantages of using pet ultrasound technology for diagnostic purposes is that it typically does not require anesthesia. However, there are exceptions to this rule. In cases where a pet is particularly anxious or unable to remain still for the duration of the procedure, mild sedation or anesthesia may be necessary. Sedation ensures not only the safety of the pet but also the accuracy of the ultrasound results. Our experienced veterinary team will evaluate your pet’s condition and temperament to determine the best approach for conducting their pet ultrasound, always prioritizing the least stressful and most effective method for obtaining accurate diagnostic information.
